I met my late wife 10 years ago in Blackpool. It was a chance meeting in a pub, I was talking to a lady who turned out to be her daughter. All I heard was "you have no chance with her, she's a Lesbian". I went to talk to the lady who shouted out sat behind the table and never thought anymore about it. It was only later when she wanted to pop out and her daughter brought the wheel chair over, did I realise she had no legs, both had been amputated high above the knee. I was slightly taken aback but also realised legs or No legs I really did love this woman. We were together for 6 years total and married for 3 of those. We did more as a couple than most do in a lifetime. Nothing was ever uncomfortable and we just got on with it. Everything was incredible. It also released my hidden Dev, I would like nothing more than to meet another leg amputee but realise I can't be lucky twice.

Wait, did you say that both her and her daughter are amputees?

Well, the whole idea of a first date is rather redolent of romantic novelettes and high school crushes. I've had first dates, but with fully limbed girls and women and never with a one-legged girl or woman.

With amputees and devotees, it's more like hunting or having a sudden stroke of luck, to be grasped or regretted forever more. I chanced upon and approached one lady in a shopping centre in the London satellite town of Croydon, having spotted her years and years earlier on a bus in the southern London suburb of Streatham and kicked myself for not having approached her then. The bus sighting was perhaps in 1980, the meeting in '88 and we met quite a few times, the last in 1994-ish.

Another lady I met at the now long-closed artificial limb centre in the London suburb of Roehampton. Now, I _never_ever_ went there in the speculative hope of meeting an amputee (I considered this base). The meeting would have been a proper date, except that it was actually a cool commercial transaction. It was organised by a friend (now long dead) who wanted me to meet the lady with her full consent and interest. The venue was her suggestion and she introduced me to the prosthetist as her chaperone, resulting in my being allowed to see her intimate parts. Quite memorable for a first "date"! This was in late 1985 and we kept on meeting on a regular (and yes, commercial!) basis into the mid-90s.

I've had just one more encounter, and that wasn't a date, either. It was a meeting at a Fascination conference. It's a hugely long story, but Fascination was a an amp/dev quarterly magazine ran by a DBK lady in Chicago. It appeared for 15-odd years in the 1980s and 90s and ran annual get-togethers called conferences. These were invariably in reasonably good 3/4-star hotels near O'Hare airport and were always on the Thursday through to the Sunday nearest to the summer solstice in mid/late June. Anyway, at the 1995 conference I was lucky to socialise with a very pretty Puertorican Newyorker exactly my age, and we had a whale of a time, promising each other a series of repeats. As often happens, the promise never materialised and we've now long lost touch. This wasn't a romantic episode, however, but another cool commercial transaction, though we did genuinely like each other -- definitely in a physical and possibly in a social way.

The nearest I came to a purely romantic involvement with an amputeee lady was through the Outsiders' Club, a British dating and socialising group for people with disabilities. The Outsiders was organised and ran by a lady called Tuppy Owens who campaigned for the right of disabled people to enjoy s*ex, pure and simple. The club met monthly in pubs in London and had regional groups which met in pubs elsewhere around Britain. Meetings were usually attended by a dozen or so people, with those before Christmas attracting up to two or even three dozen. I used to tag along with diminishing enthusiasm and lo, the month I had decided would be my last, I spotted a sexy girl whom I "chatted up." Amazingly, I had sighted that same girl while she was on holiday in Malta in the 1980s with her parents, using crutches. Anyway, we had a whale of an evening and agreed to meet again in her part of West London. Sadly, though, that was it! She never answered the 'phone whose number she'd given me and never rang me. The only winner was the Outsiders Club which got another year's membership dues from me. (Actually, they did some wonderful work and I do not begrudge a penny of what I gave them over the years.) That was a good 20 years ago.

The commercial aspect of "dates" might strike you as distasteful, but that's how the cookie crumbled for me. I often wonder what would have happened if I hinted at cash to the Outsiders Club girl...

Had been in contact with a high-SAK girl via social media for months. Had very profound, inspiring chats about virtually everyting. “The one topic” was up to her, I never started talking about it. As she lives in a poor country, she was now and then mentioning her problems in life on one leg, her relying on axillary crutches even when streets are muddy after rainfall.

I eventually arranged for a meeting on kind of a business trip and it was nice apart from one little disappointment: She was showing up on a prosthesis, which she had never mentioned to own. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy for her to own that thing, but us devotees…I guess, you know :sarc:
Well, it was her first day using it outdoor, so she appreciated my occasional assistance. We spent a nice day together in the city center, visiting cafes and all that stuff. I enjoyed showing up in public with her confidently, despite all stares from people around us. After all, we were an unusual couple indeed: A local girl gasping down the street on one leg, totally sweating from the tropical sun while being escorted by a relaxed guy, whose decent clothing could not dissimulate his origin from the “Golden West”, visibly enjoying his role as a gentlemen. All the long-legged, high-heeled, totally tarted up ladies there were just clueless about my choice.

It has been a memorable day, just like the following half-night, after which I had to leave for my next appointment in a city 10 hours from there. We exchanged our blessings and plans for a follow-up…
