Amputation of the arm or leg is done on halfway - below or above the wrist, (except for cancer or traffic accidents).
Is there a rule?

medija,
Let's not forget that, as much as we may admire the result, because it's both permanent and life changing, amputation is always a last resort when all other options have been exhausted.

I seriously doubt that there is "a rule" as such but rather two prime criteria that any surgeon will be mindful of:
1) Remove the minimum required to address the problem.
2) Wherever possible leave a stable stump suited to prosthetic fitment/ use.

Not for us as devotees, but for authorities like social insurance companies. They have to evaluate how difficult a physical disability is-or the degree of crippling.
In Germany a amputation stump will be devided in thirds. A midthigh amputation also is in „the middle third“. Further in use are terms like ultra-short (above trochanter minor), short (1st third) and long (3rd third to knee).

Thanks for the info. Trust insurance companies to to be so "matter of fact" over something so personal and traumatic. Unbelievable!!
